FAQ

Selecting and validating dimethyl silicone fluid when changing suppliers
Matching viscosity is a useful starting point for screening alternatives, but it does not establish interchangeability. First compare test temperature, method and permitted tolerance, then examine volatility, cleanliness, contact materials and performance in the intended application. Adoption should depend on laboratory trials, production trials and finished-product validation.
Lubrication, mould release, damping and formulation-carrier applications have different acceptance priorities. Explaining what the fluid does in the equipment or formulation usually produces a more useful supplier response than simply asking for the same viscosity.
Compare viscosity under the same conditions
Identical numbers can refer to different temperatures, units or methods. Kinematic viscosity is commonly expressed in mm²/s or cSt; dynamic viscosity in mPa·s or cP. Conversion requires density at the same temperature. The numbers cannot simply be matched.
Before requesting quotations or samples, clarify:
1. Material type and principal composition, confirming that candidates serve the same functional role.
2. Viscosity test temperature, units, method, specification range and measured batch result.
3. Whether each figure is a typical value, a delivery limit or a result for a particular batch.
4. Application, operating temperature, dosage, contact materials and unacceptable failure modes.
Purchasing specifications should state acceptable ranges and acceptance methods rather than a nominal number alone. Typical values describe a product; they are not automatically a commitment for every delivered batch.

Set priorities by application
Lubrication
Compare friction, wear and relubrication intervals using the actual friction pair, load, speed and temperature. Check seals and surrounding materials for compatibility. Similar feel at room temperature does not establish equal long-term lubrication performance.
Mould release
Keep mould, moulded material, application method and dosage constant. Assess release force, consecutive release cycles, mould deposits and product-surface residue. Include bonding, coating or printing in acceptance testing when these operations follow moulding.
Damping
Measure resistance, return behaviour or movement time across the intended temperature range. Check changes after temperature cycling and inspect seals. Room-temperature viscosity alone can miss cold-start or high-temperature damping changes.
Formulation carrier
Use the actual mixing order, temperature and dosage to assess dispersion, separation, oil bleed and storage stability. For coatings or adhesives, also examine surface defects and bonding; for electrical applications, add tests required for the finished product.
Validate from sample to production
1 Agree acceptance criteria
Retain current technical documents, batch records and normal production data for the existing material. Turn complaints and past anomalies into checks, such as residue, oil bleed, deposits or damping changes.
2 Run controlled laboratory trials
Keep the current fluid as a reference. Use the same equipment, dosage, mixing order and test conditions for candidates, without changing other variables simultaneously. If a formulation change is necessary, create a separate trial group and record why.
3 Trial under actual operating conditions
After laboratory requirements are met, confirm scale-up processing, actual contact materials and continuous operation. Set ageing duration, temperature range and cycle counts according to product life and risk; there is no universal passing number.
4 Document purchasing and change requirements
Record approved specifications, test methods, applicable processes and restrictions. Agree COAs, retained samples, batch traceability and change notification. Continue monitoring delivered batches after sample approval.
Judge results against acceptance criteria agreed in advance, not an impression that the materials look alike. Passing one test supports a conclusion only for that test and its conditions.
Information to prepare for a supplier enquiry
Provide a non-confidential application summary: purpose, target viscosity and test conditions, operating temperature, dosage, contact substrates, current problems, target market and expected order quantity. Specify methods and acceptance criteria for volatility, cleanliness or compliance requirements.
As a provider of solutions across the silicone value chain, IOTA can discuss candidate specifications within its dimethyl silicone fluid range against customer operating conditions. After initial selection, review the relevant technical data, safety information and batch inspection documents. Actual application validation determines suitability.
FAQ
Q1 Can we change suppliers directly if the stated viscosity matches
First check units, temperature, method and tolerance, then application-relevant properties. Nominal viscosity alone is insufficient without application validation.
Q2 Can cP and cSt be compared directly
No. cP measures dynamic viscosity and cSt kinematic viscosity. Conversion requires density at the same temperature.
Q3 Does a passing viscosity result on the COA guarantee performance
A COA reports batch results for the listed tests. It does not cover every application. Release, lubrication, damping and formulation stability require their own trials.
Q4 Can we switch all production immediately after a laboratory trial passes
Complete scale-up and finished-product validation according to risk. Establish traceability and change requirements before deciding the extent of the switch.
Q5 Must every impurity be tested for ordinary industrial use
The test list depends on application and risk. High-temperature, electronics and food-contact applications may differ. Establish finished-product requirements, then agree relevant testing and documents.
Q6 How can we start without complete data from the current supplier
Use retained samples from normal production and existing operating conditions to establish a baseline. Confirm material type, viscosity conditions and key properties with the supplier. Record gaps; do not treat assumptions as established specifications.
